Voice
Lessons
10 years old is recommended as the youngest age for private vocal lessons. Due to the physical nature of voice lessons (proper breathing techniques, development of the vocal chords and lung capacity), the younger body is generally not yet ready for the rigors of vocal technique. For children younger than 10, we have a children's choir (ages 6-9.) Children younger than 6 should be placed in a preschool music program that includes singing.
Drums
The average age or our youngest drum student is 8. This varies greatly depending on the size of the child. They hate to be able to reach both the pedals and the cymbals.
Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, & Bassoon
Due to lung capacity, we recommend that beginning woodwind students are 9 and older.
Violin & Viola
We recommend that children be at least 8 to start these instruments. We accept beginning violin students at age 8. We also do not recommend 1/2 or 3/4 size violins.
Cello & Double Bass
Children should be at least 10 due to size of these instruments.
Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, & Euphonium/Baritone
These brass instrument require physical exertion and lung power. 9 years and older is a good time to start the trumpet.
Tuba
Due to the large size of this instrument and required lung power, we recommend that beginners be at least 10 years old.
