4
- 6 Years Old
At this age only the most mature children are ready for private piano lessons. Children must have developed a longer attention span and be able to pay attention for at least half an hour.
To get the most out of lessons at this age, children should still be placed in a group setting where they leanr the building blocks of music - ear training, solfege singing, keyboard playing, ensemble and rhythm activities, with movement and music creativity.
6 - 8 Years Old
More children are ready for private instruction by this age. However, most piano teachers require that children be in second grade before they will take them on.
Group classes are the recommended method of learning piano/music for this age group. Look for a program that emphasis keyboard performance and note reading through a holistic approach; an organized development of pitch, rhythm, solfege singing, ear-training, sight-reading, chord recognition, and keyboard and movement activities.
Piano/Keyboard
At our school 8 years old is the youngest age that we start children in private piano lessons. They are old enough to have the attention span required for sitting through a half hour lesson.
Look for a method that emphasis total musicianship - ear training, solfege singing, keyboard performance and writing music.
Guitar - Acoustic, Electric and Bass
8 years old is the earliest we recommend for guitar lessons. Guitar playing requires a fair amount of pressure on the fingertips from pressing on the strings. Children under 8 generally have small hands and may find playing uncomfortable. Bass guitar students generally are 10 years old and older.
